The 60 hectares (148 acres) of vineyards are planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller quantities of Merlot. The chteau lies on the "Route des Grands Vins" opposite the renowned second growth estate, Chteau Ducru-Beaucaillou. When created in 1870 Chteau du Glana comprised 5ha (12 acres) of vines. After a series of owners and vineyard extensions, the property was acquired by Gabriel Meffre in 1961. Under his supervision the vineyard increased further to 43ha (106 acres). Key purchases included parcels from the nearby third growth estate, Chteau Lagrange. The Meffre family still own the property today, with Jean-Paul and his two sons Ludovic and Julien leading the management of the chteau and its vineyards. They have undertaken extensive renovations at the estate, which have included the restoration of the vat room and wine cellars. Approximately 65 percent of the vineyards are devoted to the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, while the remaining 35 percent is set aside for the growth of Merlot. These vines average 25 years old and are planted in Garonne gravel soils. Each plot of vines is managed individually and, after harvest, the grapes are fermented under temperature-controlled conditions. Cold maceration follows, with 3 weeks vatting time in concrete and stainless steel tanks. The wine is then transferred to French oak barrels (typically 40 percent new) to age for 12 months. Annual production levels of the grand vin reach roughly 120,000 bottles. The second wine is Pavillon du Glana.
